Let's Have An Animated Halloween!
The Halloween Countdown, Day 17
Can't have Halloween without some classic animated shorts!
We'll start with The Skeleton Dance from Disney (1929):
Ub Iwerks later redid this for Screen Gems/Columbia as Skeleton Frolic (1937):
Then on to an early Betty Boop cartoon, Hallowe'en Party (1933)*:
Next, another Disney, this time with Mickey Mouse in Haunted House:
Popeye the Sailor and Bluto fight over Olive Oyl on Halloween in Fright to the Finish:
And for Baby Boomer nostalgia (not because it's good, 'cause it ain't, but I always liked the song; feel free to skip ahead to 3:44), Woody Woodpecker in Spook-A-Nanny (1964):
* Not one of Fleisher Studios best in many respects. For sheer spookiness, check out the backgrounds as an animated Cab Calloway sings in Snow-White and Minnie the Moocher (we'll speculate on rampant hallucinogen use by 1930s animators another time):
