Be Seeing You...

We lost Patrick McGoohan yesterday... and I'm sad.

There are obituaries and tributes all over the web (BBC News, Six of One, etc.), but I won't recap them here. Better to remember him in Secret Agent (aka Danger Man), The Prisoner, The Three Lives of Thomasina (no, I am not kidding!), The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh, Ice Station Zebra, Scanners, and, later, the most interesting character in Braveheart.

I'm gonna miss you, Patrick; you made my early years much more interesting and entertaining.

Yeah, I'm not exaggerating in the least when I said I was sad, especially since I didn't know until the day afterwards.

I liked Patrick, but I always got the feeling that his characters (and indeed he) were not to be trifled with. I think I first saw him in Disney's "Three Lives of Thomasina" in its original theatre run. There was something unreadable in his face, a bit beetle-browed with something of a smirk for a smile, and that lovely tendency to mumble lines in that croaking brogue just before exploding. I watched "Ice Station Zebra" Monday in tribute. I know from an early age that I really liked that face.
